TOP IN SHORE DIVING

Shore Diving

Accolades are nothing new to the Cayman Islands, which has been rated the number one destination in the Caribbean and Mexico by TripAdvisor travellers. And now, Grand Cayman has been listed among the Ten Best Destinations for Shore Diving by Scubadiving.com. Here's the review:

"Though many of Grand Cayman's famed reefs and walls can be reached only by boat, there are a number of beach-accessible gems to explore. On the island's west end is Eden Rock and Devil's Grotto, a maze of grottoes and caverns where schools of silversides and silver tarpon hang out. It's a long swim - about 150 yards - but well worth it to reach Babylon, just east of Old Man Bay on Grand Cayman's East End. It's best to paddle out to the buoy and then drop down on the wall. Be sure to also check out the shore dives available at Sunset House, Cobalt Coast Resort and Lighthouse Point with Divetech."

DIVE SITE OF THE MONTH: THE WRECK OF THE BALBOA

Marine life on the Balboa

Located only 200 yards from the George Town dock, the wreck of the Balboa is one of Grand Cayman's most popular night dive sites. The Balboa was a 375-foot freighter that was used to haul lumber. The 1932 hurricane that devastated the islands caught her unprepared in the harbour and she sank in shallow water.

The Balboa's remnant is a line of metal pieces, including a section of the boiler room, the propeller and a piece of the stern section of the hull. It is a habitat for thousands of marine invertebrates, including a variety of crabs, brittle stars, octopuses, anemones and nudibranchs.

The Cayman Islands' unique Worry Free Hurricane Guarantee covers cancellations made prior to arrival and compensation if vacation time is cut short because of inclement weather. As soon as a hurricane is anticipated, guests may cancel their vacation at many of Cayman's hotels and condos, with at most only a one night penalty for cancellations made up to 48 hours prior to check-in.
