REEF REPORT --- AETOBATUS NARINARI

Reef Report

Spotted Eagle Rays (Aetobatus narinari) are one of the most majestic and charismatic rays found in the Atlantic. They are easily identified by their dark backs covered with numerous white spots and circles (called donuts). These rays can grow to 9 feet across and have two to six bony barbs at the base of their tail. Spotted Eagle Rays cruise along reef walls, stopping to dig in the sand for crustaceans and mollusks. One of their favorite foods is conch! You can see them gliding off the wall at White Stroke Canyon in Grand Cayman and the famous Eagle Ray Roundup in Little Cayman. If you are lucky, you might even spot an eagle ray jumping completely out of the water!

Sneak a peek at the majesty of Grand Cayman's magnificent underwater realm from anywhere in the world thanks to an underwater webcam recently installed by Ocean Frontiers. The reef cam, anchored in 6 feet of water about 1,000 yards from the Ocean Frontiers dock, sits inside a protected lagoon and streams real time video from a shallow reef on the island’s remote East End during daylight hours. The reef cam is part of a reef monitoring system set up by Teens4Oceans (T4O) a nonprofit organization with a mission to empower young people to be ocean stewards through research, technology and education.

DIVE SITE OF THE MONTH: JAPANESE GARDENS
Dive site of the Month

The majestic South walls are just as dramatic as their western partners, and the shallower reef dives along Grand Cayman's southern coast are spectacular. Dive sites like Japanese Gardens, located inside the South Wall drop-off features caves, tunnels and chutes along with some of the most elaborate coral formations to be found anywhere in the Cayman Islands. Like Kent’s Caves, this dive is noted for its superb examples of elkhorn coral and tiny, bright blue juvenile fish delight in hiding within the elkhorn branches. Offering an abundance of passageway’s waiting to be explored, the fish watching here can only be described as excellent.
