DIVE SITE OF THE MONTH: BLOODY BAY WALL

Bloody Bay Wall

Recently heralded as one of the planet's 50 greatest dive sites by Sport Diver magazine (Feb 2013) Bloody Bay Wall as the name implies is a breathtaking wall that starts at depths of less than 20 feet (6M). Lush with corals, sponges and pristine formations, Bloody Bay wall runs along the far northwestern shoreline of Little Cayman. The top of this legendary drop off is the shallowest in the Cayman Islands and the face is an amazing sheer cliff. It's common to see eagle rays cruising along Grand Cayman's North Wall, but in Little Cayman, eagle rays feed in the sand alleys and are approachable. Bloody Bay is also a great spot for snorkelling between dives. Shoreward of the wall is a maze of coral canyons in just 20 feet (6M) of water. Teeming with marine life and filled with parrotfish, bar jacks, squirrelfish and schoolmasters, the Bloody Bay area is a delight with or without a tank.

REEF REPORT --- SUMMERTIME SILVERSIDES

Summertime Silversides

Atlantic silversides are small, silvery fish found throughout the Atlantic and Caribbean. During summer months, silversides appear at several famous sites on Grand Cayman including Grouper Grotto, Snapper Hole and Cinderella's Castle. Devil's Grotto, a popular dive site on the west side of Grand Cayman, features a labyrinth of swim-throughs and tunnels lit up by beams of streaming sunlight. From June to August, these chambers are packed with millions of silversides.

Silversides utilize the "strength in numbers" strategy to prevent predation. By swimming in a large group, individuals silversides are less likely to be picked off by a predator. If you encounter a school of silversides while diving, be on the lookout for predators like the tarpon, jacks and groupers. These hungry predators will swoop into the center of a school of silversides, pick out a few fish from the middle, and dart away before you can say Menidia menidia (the species name of the Atlantic silverside)! CAYMANSPEAK: MARL ROAD

Caymanspeak: Marl Road

Where is the Marl Road? Don't get confused searching for the Marl Road on your Cayman Islands road map. In local Caymanian dialect, the marl Road (mah'rl rode) is not an actual road but means the word on the street or hearsay. Often times, even though the Marl Road has the scoop on local issues before the media, it should not be relied upon as the main source for local news. On September 6-8, join the Alexander Hotel and the Brac Scuba Shack for a Lion Fish Derby on Cayman Brac. Prizes will be given for winners in various categories including the most captured lionfish. $305 includes 2 night stay, registration fee and Saturday evening dinner.

The Lionfish is an invasive species that is posing a threat to marine wildlife and reefs in the Cayman Islands and the Caribbean as a whole. No one knows exactly how they arrived in our waters, but the most accepted method is the accidental or intentional release of aquarium fish into the marine environment. These ravenous predators devour juvenile fish and crustaceans in very large quantities; are equipped with venomous spines which deter predators and can cause painful wounds in humans; and are capable or reproducing at a rate of 30,000 eggs every four days.
