MARCH REEF REPORT: OOOH, BARRACUDA!

Baracuda

Have you ever been diving in the Cayman Islands and you see a silvery torpedo with a large underslung jaw and a formidable bite? Must be a Great Barracuda. These long, cylindrical fish have silvery scales with scattered dark blotches and can grow up to six feet long. Don't let the Great Barracuda's stealthy movements, lightning speed, and pointed teeth intimidate you. They might be a top predator in the coral reef ecosystem, but these curious fish just want to follow you around the reef. According to REEF's fish abundance database, Great Barracudas are seen on nearly 50% of dives in the Cayman Islands. Southern Sennets, another member of the barracuda family, have a similar body shape but are much smaller, lack the black blotches, and are usually found swimming in polarized schools. Southern Sennets are much less common than Great Barracudas in the Cayman Islands.

Brought to you by the Reef Environmental Education Foundation (REEF).

DID YOU KNOW?: CAYMAN BRAC

The Bluff

Did you know that the Central Caribbean Marine Institute (CCMI) recently collaborated with the Cayman Islands Department of Environment (DoE) to establish the islands' first coral nursery? The coral nursery focuses on staghorn coral (Acropora cervicornis), a branching coral that was once dominant in Caribbean reefs but has since seen a decline in population due to threats such as disease, hurricanes and human effects like climate change.

For more information on CCMI and this initiative, click here: http://www.caymanislands.ky/aboutcayman/caymanbrac.aspx.
