MAY REEF REPORT: IT'S TURTLE TIME!

May REEF Report: It's Turtle Time!

May marks the beginning of nesting season for Green turtles (Chelonia mydas) and Loggerheads (Caretta caretta) in the Cayman Islands. At night, female sea turtles crawl onto sandy beaches to dig nests and lay their eggs. After about two months, tiny babies dig out of the nest and dash for the water, beginning their life in the ocean. Sea turtles are masters of navigation and faithfully return to the same exact beach where they were born to lay their eggs, even if it means swimming hundreds or thousands of miles. If you are lucky enough to see nesting or hatching activity, keep your distance, remain quiet, avoid using flashlights or cameras, and contact the Department of Environment.

DID YOU KNOW?: KITTIWAKE

Kittiwake

Did you know that the Kittiwake, recently awarded TripAdvisor's Certificate of Excellence, was previously a U.S. submarine rescue vessel? After a triumphant sinking in 2011, the vessel has taken up vibrant residency along the northern tip of Seven Mile Beach as an artificial reef for goliath groupers to patrol the ship's bottom and for countless other sea critters to play among its decks.

DIVE SITE OF THE MONTH:
CRYSTAL PALACE WALL, NORTH SHORE, LITTLE CAYMAN

Crystal Palace Wall

This deep dive, just north of Sparrowhawk Hill, is a superb alternative to Bloody Bay Wall, even though it has a much deeper start (minimum depth of 60ft) to the wall and is more reminiscent of the North Wall of Grand Cayman. It features excellent coral and sponge growth, teeming with large schools of fish.
